Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto this generation, and thy power to every one that is to come.(Psalms 71:18) KJV
Christian apologists have been playing defense for generations. They’ve worked to keep the Bible relevant while the world of popular science (SciPop) became an intellectual Death Star and destroyed any competing paradigm.
On the face of it, why wouldn’t it? If science is a body of facts then only an idiot would oppose it, and what’s the point of listening to idiots if all they do is point to a 2,000 year old book which was written by ignorant Bronze-Age goat herders who didn’t know where the sun went at night? Maybe it’s time to examine the relationship between science and facts.
O Timothy! Guard what was committed to your trust, avoiding the profane and idle babblings and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge— by professing it some have strayed concerning the faith.(1 Timothy 6:20-21) NKJV
The Bible uses the phrase “science falsely so called” to refer to a strong delusion which has been made available so that people can choose to believe the lie that our existence doesn’t need God.
This being the case it implies that there’s such a thing as “science” which refers to “that which may be known of God.” As such, anything which claims to be scientific but which is in opposition to God’s revealed truth needs to have a different name. That’s why we use “popular science” (SciPop) to refer to the dominant paradigm. We now have two competing paradigms: SciPop vs. Matty’s Paradigm.
A fact is a : something that has actual existence, b : an actual occurrence.– Fact, definition (Merriam-Webster)
What’s a fact? Technically a fact is something which is known to be true. It’s something for which there’s evidence. It ought to be something which is going to continue to be true regardless of what we believe about science or the Bible. The truth of a fact shouldn’t be paradigm-dependent.
If something’s only true in one paradigm, like black holes and dark matter in SciPop, then they can’t be facts. In this case the fact is that it appears that 90% of the mass of the universe is missing. How we account for this is paradigm-dependent. In SciPop it’s accounted for by black holes and dark matter. In Matty’s Paradigm it’s the firmament.
SciPop is a rationalization of the premise that the Bible isn’t true. Matty’s Paradigm is a rationalization of the premise that the Bible is true. We all use the same facts and evidence. It’s possible to reconcile all physical evidence and empirical observations with the revealed truth of God in the Bible. We’re going to show this generation the power of God.
