From Geba to Rimmon

The whole land shall be turned into a plain from Geba to Rimmon south of Jerusalem. But Jerusalem shall remain aloft on its site from the Gate of Benjamin to the place of the former gate, to the Corner Gate, and from the Tower of Hananel to the king’s winepresses. And it shall be inhabited, for there shall never again be a decree of utter destruction. Jerusalem shall dwell in security.

(Zechariah 14:10-11) ESV

The prophecy of the establishment of the Millennial Kingdom describes dramatic changes to the landscape. Zechariah chapter 14 is one of several that describe Jerusalem being lifted up.

What does it mean, that Jerusalem will be lifted up? Lifted up in prayer? Part of Zechariah’s prophesy describes the land around Jerusalem from Geba to Rimmon being as a flat plain, but then we have some flowery poetic language which appears to describe the land being physically lifted up. Not forgetting this flowery poetic language either:

Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain.

(Isaiah 40:4) ESV

This means that the current mountainous topography is going to be changed. Not only that, but the land is going to be lifted up. You see, we didn’t even make up the words that we used for the subject heading for November: The Lifting up of Jerusalem.

The identity of the town of Geba is well established, but the location of Rimmon is more speculative. There is more than one Rimmon, but other locations for a place of that name are further north of Geba, so they can’t be what the passage is referring to. Working with the best information that we have we can we can use a location in the south which is also referred to as Ain. This gives us an area including Jerusalem with an approximate diameter of 40 miles. This gives us a rough idea of the size of the plateau that is to be at the top of the mountain that fills the whole Earth.

The timing of this event is very interesting, given that the physical changes to the earth are in preparation for the Lord Jesus to take the throne in Jerusalem and rule the Millennial Kingdom. Fortunately there is a lot more description of this event, the physical changes that the earth will suffer, and the broader context of the fulfillment of prophesy. It is quite complicated. The information comes from a variety of sources, Isaiah and Zechariah as we have seen, but also Ezekiel, Daniel and the Revelation.

We have to admit that we’ve never much liked trying to make sense of either Ezekiel or Revelation. Apparently we made an effort at some time in the past and we have a collection of notes that seem to be a reasonable understanding of this event and its context.

It’s odd how life takes its twists and turns and we can find ourselves after years of time quite forgetting where we are, who we are, and what we have learned. We began this social media ministry about 5 years ago (October 2015) and it has led us into so much new knowledge that we feel absolutely blessed by God to have been given such understanding. Yet when we began looking through old notebooks, to see if there was anything worthwhile in them, we stumbled upon our work on the lifting up of Jerusalem from back around 2005. We were surprised and delighted to see that this is ground that we’ve already plowed, and evidently while we were being very diligent. It’s quite wonderful to be able to put this work into a bigger context, probably at least 15 years after originally writing it.

We’re excited to be able to show the unfulfilled prophesies of the Bible in their scientific context, but we’re also excited about the personal side of the endeavor. To borrow a phrase from a recent SciFi movie, “we’re going to have to do a deep dive.” This will be like a journey into our mind with the goal to find, through the Holy Spirit, the mind of Christ.
