Circular Reasoning

A reliable witness always tells the truth, but an unreliable one tells nothing but lies.

(Proverbs 14:5) Good News Translation

If you choose to believe what unbelievers write and say about the Bible, because you don’t want it to be true, you’re just fooling yourself, or attempting to. You’re using circular reasoning.

The Bible isn’t an opinion. What you decide to believe about the Bible is your opinion. A choice. Mainstream science (SciPop) doesn’t have any proof that the Bible is wrong because because the proof it claims to have depends on you choosing to believe it. Science = faith. Absence of evidence proves nothing.

We all have the same evidence. Our choice of paradigm determines what we think it’s evidence of.

Matty’s Razor

IF and THEN form the basis of the religious practice of circular reasoning which is an integral part of SciPop. They work together like logical fudge to allow the rationalization of physical evidence within the paradigm. The basis of faith in SciPop looks something like this:

Circular Reasoning in SciPop 1

  1. IF humans evolved,
    • THEN it’s necessary to believe that the Earth is billions of years old.
  2. IF the Earth is billions of years old,
    • THEN it’s necessary to believe that radioactive isotopes have always decayed at a constant rate.
  3. IF radioactive isotopes have always decayed at the same rate,
    • THEN it’s necessary to believe that the Earth is billions of years old.
  4. IF the Earth is billions of years old,
    • THEN it’s necessary to believe that humans evolved.

Faith is believing in something that you can’t see, because of evidence.

– Faith, definition

Here’s another example:

Circular Reasoning in SciPop 2

  1. IF the Earth orbits the Sun,
    • THEN it’s necessary to believe that stars are distant suns and galaxies.
  2. IF stars are distant suns and galaxies,
    • THEN it’s necessary to believe that our solar system formed billions of years ago.
  3. IF our solar system formed billions of years ago,
    • THEN it’s necessary to believe that the stars are distant suns and galaxies.
  4. IF the stars are distant suns and galaxies,
    • THEN it’s necessary to believe that the Earth orbits the Sun.

There’s an advanced form of circular reasoning which we call inductive, reductive circular reasoning. It incorporates other branches and sub-disciplines of science such as stellar spectroscopy and radiometric dating. Radiometric dating is pseudoscience.
