He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes.
(Proverbs 13:24) KJV
As a single dad who’s been chewed up and spat out by by social services there isn’t anything more sickening than a Pastor preaching at full-tilt and yelling about how he beat his kids for any minor infraction of his authority.
That is, except for the loud AMENS! they get from the congregation who are either beating their kids or who want you to think that they’re beating their kids.
The underlying principle is sound: teach children to respect authority and obey instruction for their own well being and safety. The problem with this is that most family dynamics are far from typical. If parents are separated, because they don’t agree on anything, what happens when a dad sends the kids home with either marks on their butts or the kids tell their moms that they got a spanking? Dad is going to be getting a visit from Child Protective Services and have local authorities crawling all over his life. It can be disastrous.
Some family situations are broken and they can’t be fixed. Is it loving to demand your right to spank your kids and have the courts deny you visitation? Have you failed as a Christian if you think complying with the law is worth it to be able to raise your own kids?

September 28th – Loosing Control
Can we adapt and become a vessel which can carry the gospel forward which neither needs to be controlled nor desires any control?
