We live in a universe governed by physical laws. One of them is the first law of thermodynamics which says that energy can't be created or destroyed, just transformed from one form to another.
What was the Darkness?
The darkness that existed in the beginning (Genesis 1:1) was the darkness of a complete absence of light. The darkness that came at the evening of the first day was a created darkness.
