Ferruginous Dust from Venus

Thus says the LORD: “By this you shall know that I am the LORD. Behold, I will strike the waters which are in the river with the rod that is in my hand, and they shall be turned to blood.

(Exodus 7:17) NKJV

Immanuel Velikovsky went to great lengths to relate the plagues of the Exodus to events of world-wide significance which are recorded in the history of many cultures, not just the Hebrews.

He uses abundant cultural and historical records to incorporate the planet Venus into the narrative as an errant comet which came into our solar system and which was captured by the gravitational force of our sun. In the process of settling down into its current stable orbit it made a series of close passes of the Earth which allow it to have been the source of material for several of the plagues.

Velikovsky specifically relates turning the rivers into blood as having been a rain of ferruginous (iron-rich) dust spun off by Venus as it passed by. That’s the kind of thing that we (that’s me and the Holy spirit) would do. No wonder peer review hated him.

In Velikovsky’s narrative iron oxides in the dust were what made the water red and taste of blood. He also relates this dust to the red coloration of deposits all across Northern China, and elsewhere, the origin of which can’t be determined. The penny didn’t drop for Velikovsky, because he was still basically an evolution-or-bust atheist, but these are the same deposits which contain the skeletons of supposedly Triassic dinosaurs.
