The Lamb’s Book of Life

By its light will the nations walk, and the kings of the earth will bring their glory into it, and its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there. They will bring into it the glory and the honor of the nations. But nothing unclean will ever enter it, nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

(Revelation 21:24-27) ESV

Is your name written in the Lamb’s book of life? The Lamb is Jesus Christ. Believe in Jesus Christ and your name is written in the book of life.

In our search for clues about what the new Jerusalem may be like there are some subtle ones here. The gates will be open, and people will walk into it. That means they must have been outside.

Here’s an interesting thought: we know the dimensions of the new Jerusalem and we know how much space a person takes up. We could calculate the maximum capacity of the new Jerusalem and assume that this is how many people are going to be in heaven.

But is that missing the point? This passage tells us that the nations of them that are saved and the kings of the Earth will enter through the gates. Nations were saved out of the old Earth before it vanished. Why are there still nations? What are the kings of Earth in this passage kings of, if the Earth passed away? Could it be that the new Earth has nations and kings just as the old Earth had? Could this mean that each nation with its king will enter the new Jerusalem to worship at their appointed season, then return to their homeland on the new Earth?

This removes the limit on how many people could be in the new Jerusalem. The limit isn’t a physical number, it’s the spiritual condition of each individual. Your spiritual condition will determine whether or not your name is written in the Lamb’s book of life.
