Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!(Isaiah 5:20) ESV
The parallels between light and good vs. darkness and evil are stated throughout scripture. Isaiah laments people who try to make you believe that good is evil and evil is good, and who put darkness for light.
Jesus makes the parallels between light and good, darkness and evil, and shows us how they are distinct from each other.
We all have the same evidence. Our choice of paradigm determines what we think it’s evidence of.– Matty’s Razor
“The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!(Matthew 6:22-23) ESV
John gives us another example, in which Jesus goes into more detail:
And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. But whoever does what is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his works have been carried out in God.”(John 3:19-21) ESV
Good and light go together. Darkness and evil go together. The desired outcome and the purpose of creation is to bring about the permanent physical separation of light from darkness, good from evil. The sacrifice that had to be made so that we can have free will was the temporary binding together of light and darkness.
- Call upon the name of Jesus Christ,
- believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead,
- confess your sin.
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.(James 1:17) ESV
God’s nature is light. God has chosen life and good, the alternative is death and evil. Life and good align with light, illumination and transparency. Nothing is hidden. The truth is manifest.
The nature of the universe that God created is such that the attributes of life, good and light can be made into a physical place where people may live. Similarly, dark, death and evil may also be gathered together into a place. Indeed, due to the properties of matter one may not exist without the other. The refinement process whereby light and darkness will be made permanently separate is ongoing.
This is the choice that we have been given: light and life or darkness and death? Jesus Christ is the light. God’s hope, what His soul yearns for, is for people who will love Him for who He is. Not grudgingly or because of a conditioned response. The first of the Ten Commandments: Thou shalt have no other gods before me, is a stated desire not a preordained outcome.
The Bible is in large part the history of our non-compliance. God won’t make us worship Him. The choice we make about the relationship that we want to have with God is ours to make. It must be said, however, that due to the nature of the creation in which we live, this choice has consequences.
And to this people you shall say: ‘Thus says the Lord: Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death.(Jeremiah 21:8) ESV
If you’re a Christian this ought to stir up a sense of urgency about reaching out to the world to show them that they may be making a choice which is disastrous.
