We have to account for a passage in Psalm 18 where the Bible tells us that God is in both 1) thick darkness and 2) has brightness before Him, at the same time and in the same context.
Why Have You Forsaken Me?
Light and darkness have to be separated because the manifestation of free will is only possible by combining them.
From the Sixth Hour to the Ninth Hour
Another picture that we have which is part of the symbolism of Christ on the cross is that darkness came upon the world in the middle of the day. Things on Earth are patterned after things in the heavens.
Darkness on the face of the Deep
The nature of free will is such that an individual can choose light or darkness. How can there be free will unless a choice is available? The Lord had to create a universe in which darkness exists.
Light and Darkness
On rare occasions we encounter someone who has an inkling of what we're doing, harmonizing science with the Bible, and they ask an intelligent question about it. The intelligent question was this:
Light = Good; Darkness = Evil
The parallels between light and good vs. darkness and evil are stated throughout scripture. Isaiah laments people who try to make you believe that good is evil and evil is good, and who put darkness for light.
Off the Deep End
We're going to go off the deep end which we found at the bottom of a rabbit hole: we'll draw a direct connection between the Holy Trinity and particle physics. By doing so we arrive at a theory of first cause.
The Broad Narrative of Scripture
The Bible is consistent throughout because it combines spiritual concepts, like good and evil, with their physical expression in space and time as light and darkness. It describes their permanent physical separation.
Darkness: לַחֹ֗שֶׁךְ – choshek
During the formation of planet Earth, the action of the particles moving to form the core of the Earth is pictured in the sense of sinking into darkness and obscurity.
January 15th
The period of history that brought us the scientific advances of Galileo, Kepler and Newton is called "The Enlightenment," but tragically this was when the human race was plunged into spiritual darkness.
