The Nuance of the Earth’s Corners

Ye shall not round the corners of your heads, neither shalt thou mar the corners of thy beard.

(Leviticus 19:27) KJV

Here’s a little nuance for you: Human head don’t have corners, but a beard can. We can illustrate this by putting a cheese slice on a kid’s ball. The cheese has corners, the ball isn’t flat.

The cheese looks greasy in our photo because we had to use steam to get it to lay flat on the surface of a sphere.

They shall not make baldness upon their head, neither shall they shave off the corner of their beard, nor make any cuttings in their flesh.

(Leviticus 21:5) KJV

Human heads don’t have corners, neither does planet Earth. However, a beard may have corners, that’s how the super-continent Pangaea 2.0 can have corners but planet Earth is still a sphere.

The phrase four quarters of the earth as it occurs in Revelation 20:8 is translated from the same Greek as the phrase four corners of the earth. As such, the word corner isn’t referring to a geometrical figure but to a portion of or the extremity of something. An example of the word corner being used this way can be found in Leviticus, above.

And he shall set up an ensign for the nations, and shall assemble the outcasts of Israel, and gather together the dispersed of Judah from the four corners of the earth.

(Isaiah 11:12) KJV

In Isaiah 11:12 the word translated corners is kanaph, it’s definitely not referring to a geometrical figure, most of the time it’s translated as wings.

Extremity, extreme part, corner: כַּנְפ֥וֹת kanaph

1. wing of a bird; bird of wing, i.e. winged bird; possessor of wings, i.e. bird. Metaph. for swiftness, wings of the wind, morning; as the means of protection, shadow of wings.
2. wing of an army, Isaiah 8:8
3. extremity, extreme part, corner, as of the earth.
4. skirt of the loose flowing upper garment.
5. perhaps pinnacle, Daniel 9:28, upon the pinnacle of abomination, i.e. the temple filled with abominations.
