Newton’s Toolbox

The way of life is above to the wise, that he may depart from hell beneath.

(Proverbs 15:24) KJV

Sir Isaac Newton gave science the mathematical tools it needed to deny the existence of heaven and hell. Unfortunately the tools require two assumptions which just happen to be wrong.

  1. By assuming at mass causes gravity we can deny the presence of hell and a great gulf of open space inside the Earth, and
  2. by assuming heliocentricity we can contrive values for mass of the sun, planets and stars which make it seem as if the Earth is an insignificant speck orbiting another insignificant speck in an infinite universe which has no end.

This plays nicely with the goal of popular science (SciPop) being to describe the universe in such a way that no supernatural cause is necessary. Except that it’s not mathematically accurate and all the mass values are relative and based on our assumptions. It’s ironic given that Newton seemed to be close to understanding gravity in the way that we’re proposing, he even realized that there’s something about gravity and how it operates which he didn’t know:

Tis inconceivable that inanimate brute matter should (without the mediation of something else which is not material) operate upon & affect other matter without mutual contact.

Sir Isaac Newton

Such as it was, and having only empirical measurements of circumstantial evidence, the idea that mass causes gravity was an acceptable compromise. From the point of view of SciPop it was easy to gloss over the mathematical inconsistencies and, let’s face it, most people aren’t interested enough to realize that there are any.

From our perspective the difference is profound. If mass causes gravity then God really is irrelevant. It’s equivalent to the belief that the universe requires no cause. Newton is the ground zero of academic atheism. However, if mass existed in the absence of gravity, gravity having a beginning when it was created on the 2nd day, then there can be a great gulf of open space inside the Earth just as Jesus described in Luke 16:19-31. The observations we make are the same and they’re consistent with the math, but gravity may be described with this definition:

Gravity (A) is a field emitted from a created instance (a singularity) which causes a body to have attractive force (p) proportional to its mass and inversely proportional to the square of its distance from the source (pG).

G is the gravitational constant. This is a general physical law derived from empirical observations by using deduction.
