According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
(1 Corinthians 3:10-11) KJV
Here’s an interesting question for you about church doctrine: what’s the Church’s foundation, and what’s the structure?
The simple answer is that Christ is the foundation, but has our use of this concept become warped over time? Obviously the New Testament is where the Lord meticulously lays out for us the guiding principles of the Church as the center of Christian life and work, but do we regard this as the foundation, or the structure?
The answer should be equally simple, the New Testament teaching on the Church is the structure, not the foundation. The structure that has been built is all about maintaining control. We’re to maintain control over ourselves, our families, our churches, our work, and our interactions with other people. This is given to us as a picture of God having control over His creation.
So, what if we’re not in control? What if all of the power we have over our circumstances has been stripped away? What if society has evolved to the point where it’s not threatened by our foundation, Jesus Christ, because it can freely dismiss it? As far as most people are concerned Jesus Christ is irrelevant. The problem that we’re awakening to is that the pillars of our structure are either illegal or universally detestable such that the structure is at risk. What pillars you ask? Let’s look at what Conservative Christians consider to be some of the most important aspects of Church life and doctrine.
5 Pillars of Conservative Christianity
Yikes! That looks pretty bad. We can’t be serious? Right? Let’s look at these pillars one-by-one.
