Uniformitarianism Applied

The earth is violently broken, The earth is split open, The earth is shaken exceedingly. The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, And shall totter like a hut; Its transgression shall be heavy upon it, And it will fall, and not rise again.

(Isaiah 24:19-20) NKJV

A classic example of the use of uniformitarianism is the calculation of how much has time has passed since the tectonic plates formed. Supposedly we can tell how fast the African and American continents are moving apart.

Uniformitarianism Applied

  • IF we measure the rate of sea floor spreading in the Atlantic, right now, to be X (insert any number)
    • AND if we assume that the rate of sea floor spreading has always been X,
  • THEN we can calculate how long ago the continents were together as Pangaea.

Unfortunately, the reason why the rate of sea floor spreading in the Atlantic is presently X (not moving), is because the continents moved into position thousands of years ago and then stopped. Obviously using their present rate of motion as evidence of their past rate of motion is misguided at best, deliberately deceptive at worst, what you might even call sleight-of-hand. This is clearly part of the strong delusion.

We’ve seen another disastrous application of Uniformitarianism in the calculation of how deep was Noah’s flood?. The argument goes that there’s not enough water on the earth to cover it to a depth which would top Mount Everest by 15 cubits. This argument fails for several reasons, the most obvious being that Mt. Everest didn’t exist at the time of Noah’s flood. We conclude that there was enough water in the great deep to flood the Earth to a depth of 1,200 km.
