In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
(Genesis 7:11) KJV
And it came to pass in the six hundred and first year, in the first month, the first day of the month, that the waters were dried up from the earth; and Noah removed the covering of the ark and looked, and indeed the surface of the ground was dry. And in the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth was dried.
(Genesis 8:13-14) NKJV
We need to understand where the Iridium anomaly is found in the stratigraphic column as compared to the sequence of Noah’s flood that we can deduce from the sedimentary evidence.
We have two ways to get an idea of how long the Earth was flooded, the first from the step-by-step narrative. We have to add up how much time is in the following passages. The second way is from simple dates. In this case the duration from when Noah went into the ark to when he left it is one year and 10 days, or 375 days.
Stages and Eras of Noah’s Flood
Stage | Era | Scripture | Date |
Deluge | Paleozoic (Lower Noachian) | Genesis 7:17 | 2/17 |
Windows of heaven closed | Genesis 8:2 | 3/28
Inundation | Mesozoic (Middle Noachian) | Genesis 7:24 | 3/28 |
Cretaceous/Tertiary (K/T) Boundary
Anoxic Extinction Event
Subsidence | Cenozoic (Upper Noachian) | Genesis 8:4 | 7/17 |
Waters decreased continually | Genesis 8:5-6 | 10/1
Noah sent out a raven and dove | Genesis 8:7 | 11/10
Noah sent out a raven | Genesis 8:10 | 11/18
Noah sent out a dove | Genesis 8:12 | 11/25
Dry | Noah left the Ark | Genesis 8:14 | 2/27 |
Total | 375 days |
The windows of heaven closed at the end of the 40 days and nights of rain, so anything which fell from space would be at the top of the column of sediment deposited by the deluge and inundation. The deluge is when the material fell, the inundation is when it precipitated out as a layer of sediment.
This corresponds to the boundary between the Cretaceous and Tertiary, so it doesn’t present any difficulties in interpretation.

August 19th – The Iridium Anomaly
Closing the windows of heaven caused a shower of Iridium rich shocked quartz and weathered glass beads to fall with the last of the rain: the Noah’s flood Iridium anomaly.
