Return With all Your Heart and Soul

yet when they come to themselves in the land where they were carried captive, and repent, and make supplication to You in the land of those who took them captive, saying, ‘We have sinned and done wrong, we have committed wickedness’; and when they return to You with all their heart and with all their soul in the land of their enemies who led them away captive, and pray to You toward their land which You gave to their fathers, the city which You have chosen and the temple which I have built for Your name: then hear in heaven Your dwelling place their prayer and their supplication, and maintain their cause,

When we fall aside and loose our way we have a prescription for how to find it. Once again we have to acknowledge that God is who he claims to be, and do it with that part of our being which is truly us: our heart and soul.

Life isn’t always, or ever, straightforward. It’s easy to fall away and backslide. Sooner or later we realize that we’re in a fix and we need some help to get out. Not just any help though, not like a neighbor with jumper cables. Sometimes we’re in such a precarious situation that there’s only one place to go to: we have to call upon the Lord.

This is what repenting is. It’s not about going to church, lighting candles, reciting prayers or donating money, this is when we have to humble ourselves before the Lord and admit that we made mistakes and that we’re sorry. We have to humbly ask for forgiveness. This theme is repeated, and repeated, through the Old Testament.
