The ancient Hebrews had an innate sense that the soul was wet, or was in a liquid state, as is evident from the concept that it could be poured out.
And now my soul is poured out upon me; the days of affliction have taken hold upon me.(Job 30:16) KJV
When I remember these things, I pour out my soul in me: for I had gone with the multitude, I went with them to the house of God, with the voice of joy and praise, with a multitude that kept holyday.(Psalms 42:4) KJV
Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.(Isaiah 53:12) KJV
They say to their mothers, Where is corn and wine? when they swooned as the wounded in the streets of the city, when their soul was poured out into their mothers’ bosom.(Lamentations 2:12) KJV
Not only that, but the ancient Hebrews thought that the soul could be dried up.
But now our soul is dried away: there is nothing at all, beside this manna, before our eyes.(Numbers 11:6) KJV
