Before Fallout was Gamma World
The Lord punished the people of Ashdod severely and terrified them. He punished them and the people in the surrounding territory by causing them to have tumors. When they saw what was happening, they said, โThe God of Israel is punishing us and our god Dagon. We can’t let the Covenant Box stay here any longer.โ So they sent messengers and called together all five of the Philistine kings and asked them, โWhat shall we do with the Covenant Box of the God of Israel?โ
โTake it over to Gath,โ they answered; so they took it to Gath, another Philistine city. But after it arrived there, the Lord punished that city too and caused a great panic. He punished them with tumors which developed in all the people of the city, young and old alike. So they sent the Covenant Box to Ekron, another Philistine city; but when it arrived there, the people cried out, โThey have brought the Covenant Box of the God of Israel here, in order to kill us all!โ So again they sent for all the Philistine kings and said, โSend the Covenant Box of Israel back to its own place, so that it won’t kill us and our families.โ There was panic throughout the city because God was punishing them so severely. Even those who did not die developed tumors and the people cried out to their gods for help.

Gamma World is a post-apocalyptic science fantasy role-playing game which we played in High School. It came to mind as we were pondering the tumors of 1 Samuel chapter 5.
Yesterday we found ourselves at Pittsburg Landing, Shiloh Battlefield Tennessee in 1862, just in time to narrowly avoid one of the bloodiest battles of the American Civil war. However, we’re still having problems with the phone app that came with the new Helmic Regulator which we picked up in the Punhab. As I was typing “Pittsbur…” the app glitched.

The game was originally designed by James M. Ward and Gary Jaquet, and first published by TSR in 1978. It borrows heavily from Ward’s earlier role-playing game, Metamorphosis Alpha.

Somehow we wound up in Post-apocalypse Pittsburg and we ran into some old friends. Anyway, with all of the congruence that has been emerging lately we began to pick on a thread.
My Pastor recently spoke about how it was that Moses face shone like the sun after he had been in the presence of the Lord. He took us back to Chernobyl 1986 (the same year as Gamma World Third Edition) and described what happened when one of the nuclear engineers looked into the burning reactor core. It didn’t sound good.
It would seem that the Lord emits radiation. Since God is light that’s not a problem. We can speculate that radiation is part of the reason why the Philistines developed tumors. This has been rendered as “emerods,” in the King James, which is where we get the word “Hemorrhoids.” However, based on my experience of what happened to me after I got saved and began reading the Bible, then they were swollen lymph nodes and the condition was a form of Leukemia.
So now the question becomes: what about the ark of the Covenant was emitting radiation? You don’t suppose that God made the stone tablets for the Ten Commandments out of Uranium ore do you? Well, by a totally staggering coincidence most of the Geology of the Mount Sinai area is granite.
Radiation
Granite is a natural source of radiation, like most natural stones. Potassium-40 is a radioactive isotope of weak emission, and a constituent of alkali feldspar, which in turn is a common component of granitic rocks, more abundant in alkali feldspar granite and syenites. Some granites contain around 10 to 20 parts per million (ppm) of uranium. By contrast, more mafic rocks, such as tonalite, gabbro and diorite, have 1 to 5 ppm uranium, and limestones and sedimentary rocks usually have equally low amounts.
Many large granite plutons are sources for palaeochannel-hosted or roll front uranium ore deposits, where the uranium washes into the sediments from the granite uplands and associated, often highly radioactive pegmatites.

If the granite tablets in the Ark of the Covenant were emitting gamma radiation, then perhaps the Philistines were experiencing radiation sickness.
Samuel
Samuel was sleeping in the sanctuary, where the sacred Covenant Box was. Before dawn, while the lamp was still burning, the Lord called Samuel. He answered, โYes, sir!โ and ran to Eli and said, โYou called me, and here I am.โ

Samuel spent his childhood and youth sleeping next to a source of gamma radiation. Don’t be surprised if we show up tomorrow as The Hulk.
