Defining the Soul
And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.
(Mark 12:30-31) KJV
The soul encompasses the aspects of heart, soul and mind: our self-awareness. The mind gives us grief, sorrow and knowledge of the law: all things that require understanding.
The four states of matter: solid, liquid, plasma and vapor; are present in sentient life as body, blood, plasma and breath. The breath is a spirit from God which animates us. These combine to form a being that’s inhabited by a soul. We (that’s me and the Holy spirit) have to make a distinction between visible and invisible aspects of life. We can’t use the words physical and spiritual as a distinction, because spirits are vapors that are chemical compounds which are physical.

We all have the same evidence. Our choice of paradigm determines what we think it’s evidence of.
– Matty’s Razor
We’ve been following a line of deduction to conclude that each soul is a created instance of gravity. We have a working definition of the soul:
A soul is a gravity node with a frequency unique to each individual, it encompasses the scriptural concepts of mind and heart:
– Soul, definition
– mind: the seat of our consciousness and personality;
– heart: the emotions and passion which drive and motivate us.
Our soul makes us sentient.
We’ll use this as a working hypothesis and test it against what the scripture teaches us about the soul. We’re going to find that there are aspects of the soul which will allow us to understand how it interacts with the body/blood/spirit system of biological life.
Our passage today expands upon the idea of the soul as our self-awareness. Similar accounts may also be found in Matthew 22:37 and Luke 10:27. When it mentions the heart, soul and mind together it’s referring to aspects of our self-awareness, not to new states of matter which we have to account for. Strength is an aspect of our body, so we can expand upon the mind map:
We can dig our way deeper into understanding the location of the soul, verify that the heart and mind are aspects of it, and confirm its nature as a gravity node by examining what the scripture says about the heart, soul and mind. Our passage today is part of a conversation that Jesus has with a scribe. It continues:
Faith is believing in something that you can’t see, because of evidence.
– Faith, definition
Understanding
And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he: And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices. And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question.
(Mark 12:32-34) KJV
In the scribe’s response he changes the word mind for understanding. Jesus agrees with him, and therefore we have more of an idea of what the mind is.

We can find other emotions which are aspects of the mind in scripture.
The reason for creation is the manifestation of sentient life with free will.

Grief, Sorrow and Knowledge of the Law
And Esau was forty years old when he took to wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Bashemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite: Which were a grief of mind unto Isaac and to Rebekah.
(Genesis 26:35) KJV
And among these nations shalt thou find no ease, neither shall the sole of thy foot have rest: but the LORD shall give thee there a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and sorrow of mind:
(Deuteronomy 28:65) KJV
But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
(Romans 7:23) KJV
Grief, sorrow and knowledge of the law (right and wrong) are given as aspects of the mind: things that require understanding.
We haven’t fully explored the soul, we’re still digging. Diligence requires that we don’t rush this. The soul encompasses all aspects of our personality, but if it’s also physical, a gravity node, we haven’t found it yet. Today’s image is from here.
Salvation
- Call upon the name of Jesus Christ,
- believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead,
