Elohim
In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
(Genesis 1:1) ESV
In the beginning “God,” is translated from the Hebrew Elohim. It’s plural. This means more than one. If there’s one Almighty God, then WHY does he use this word?
Welcome to WHY? A year-long daily devotional. We’re going to show you how the Holy Bible and science are in perfect harmony. However, we’re not using science to replace God: believe in Jesus Christ and you will have everlasting life.
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
(Ephesians 2:8-9) ESV
Part of any evangelical outreach has to be a clear statement of our fallen nature as humans and our need for salvation. We’re sinners. We’ve fallen short of the glory of God.
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
(Romans 3:23) ESV
There is a solution: Jesus Christ is our savior.
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
(Romans 10:9-10) ESV
In the beginning God
God: ืึฑืึนืึดึืื โ elohim is plural. This means more than one. However neither Judaism, Christianity nor Islam, three religions which worship this God, are polytheistic. If our fundamental belief is in a monotheistic God, why does he refer to himself in the plural?
God: ืึฑืึนืึดึืื – elohim
- God, god
- plural in number.
- rulers, judges, either as divine representatives at sacred places or as reflecting divine majesty and power:
- divine ones, superhuman beings including God and angels ืืืืืื.
- (the) sons of God, or sons of gods = angels, sons of princes, mighty men.
- gods, the God of gods, supreme God, other gods.
- Plural intensive.
- god or goddess, always with suffix.
- godlike one, Moses in relation to Aaron, in relation to Pharaoh; the shade of Samuel.
Elohim is that part of God which existed before the Word was incarnate, and it is the awareness of what is potentially possible. It’s God as the thought of what creation could be, before it was. We were all part of it. It’s what we euphemistically refer to as the collective consciousness.
