Outer darkness is only referred to three times in scripture, but by using context we can establish what and where it is. The easiest thing to take for context is the gnashing of teeth, which occurs nine times in the Bible.

September 20th
The planet Venus may have been the source of some of the plagues of the Exodus: rivers and streams turning into blood, a rain of hail mingled with fire, and impenetrable darkness where people couldn't see their hands in front of their faces.
September 17th
"Worlds in Collision" is the title of a book by Immanuel Velikovsky in which he proposes, that some of the Exodus plagues were caused by successive close approaches to Earth by the planet Venus.
July 15th
In Matthew chapter 24 Jesus describes the final judgement that takes place at the end of the Millennial Kingdom. At this time hell will be cast into the lake of fire. The everlasting fire that Jesus refers to isn't hell, it's something else.
